Kelly's Cakes

Several years ago, I took a basic cake decorating class. Since then, I've had a terrific time making a variety of different cakes for friends and family. My sister said I should start a blog to share the many pictures I've accumulated. Blog? What's Blog? So here we go.....

This was one of the first wedding shower cakes I made. The flowers are silk, I wish I was that good at making realistic flowers.....but that's not until my next class in the fall.

On a non-cake related subject, this was the view from our time share in Ft. Lauderdale.

One half of this cake is regular yellow cake. The other half is chocolate and vegan. No milk, no eggs. Cool, huh?

Amy's son, Hunter, wanted a pirate ship cake. This is one of the few cakes I actually felt was too cute to cut. Hunter loved the cake, ate the gold, and wanted to know why his mom wouldn't let him play with it.

The tuxedo cake is partially fondant. It was the first cake I made using fondant. The pink heart was for Mother's Day. Mike says fondant is gummy and asked me not to use it anymore on cakes I take to their house! ;-)

This is the second cake I made using the new fondant techniques I learned in a recent class.

Our office worked really hard to earn our manager a week trip to Cancun (I think it was Cancun). In appreciation, our manager asked me to make a festive cake.
Kristy's birthday cake.

Amy's daughter Emily is always coming up with new challenges for me. One year Emily said she wanted a monkey cake for her birthday. This is what I cam up with. The flower cupcakes are cut up marshmellows and gum drops. Talk about sticky!!!!

Sherry's wedding shower cake. The bottom layer was vanilla almond with raspberry filling. The top layer was chocolate with bavarian cream. It was somewhat of a practice for her wedding cake with we did with 4 layers of different flavors.

One of the girls at work loves this particular brand of potato chips. A few days before her birthday she stressed to us that she really didn't want a big deal made so we bought a bunch of little bags of chips in every color and flavor and decorated her desk with them. Someone said it was too bad I couldn't make a cake that looked like a giant potato chip. I decided this would be even better and surprised everyone.

Darth Vader. May the Force be with you.

The Cub Scout cake was difficult because of the 'badges'. It was one of the things that inspired me to go back to class and learn how to work with fondant. Fondant doesn't taste very good, in my opinion, but you can do lots of cool stuff with it.

Beauty and the beast.

Thanksgiving cake. This is one of my favorite cake. I think the colors are really pretty and I love the pumpkins and vines.

Minnie Mouse. This cake was for an adult's birthday.
Older Than Dirt Birthday cake. The 'dirt' is crushed up oreo cookies with gummy worms.

Saturday was a sad day in our family. Apollo, the family dog, was put to sleep. He started in Montana but spent much of his doggy career in Maryland. In later years, he retired to the eastern shore to take up the duties of farm dog at mom's house. He was a good dog and will surely be missed by all.

Fishes and footballs.

I know what you are thinking. A cake that ugly must have a story. You're right and if you're not thinking that, what's wrong with you? For a while, I tried my hand at making home made greeting cards. I happened to have a stamp that was a snow man cat. I made a card using the snow man cat stamp and colored it orange and black because I'm creative like that. Tracy made the fatal mistake of voicing her dislike of the card and especially the cat. So naturally when her birthday rolled around we had a ready made party theme. VOILA! Let me assure you, no one could take their eyes off of that cake. Kristy helped me decorate this one. Gee, isn't Kristy's 30th birthday drawing near? Golly, I wonder what will happen.....??

Retirement cake. No Work allowed.

Scooby Do vs. Spider Man. I think Scooby would whip Spidey any day. The little candies around Scooby Do are Scooby Snacks...what else?

Sponge Bob Square Pants.

Birthday cakes.

This is a cake on a cake. The jack-o-lantern is a small cake that is actually meant to be decorated as a teddy bear. Just change the colors and face and it's a whole different look.
